چکیده

• Two principal mechanisms have been proposed to explain closure of the ductus arteriosus. Bareroft et al.2 thought that functional closure of this vessel occurred shortly after clamping the umbilical cord and that the stimulus for closure was neurogenic. Kennedy and Clark' failed to find a neurogenie mechanism and suggested that closure was related to increased oxygenation of the bJood following the onset of breathing. Barron" tested this hypothesis by injecting 100 ml of oxygenated blood in the jugular vein of a lamb but noted no effect on the duetus. Dawes and his co-workers,' however, in a series of systematic studies carried out in the fetal lamb observed that inflation of the lungs with oxygen led to constriction of the dnctus and to production of a murmur over it. This murmur was attributed to passage of blood through the narrowed lumen of the ductus. Ventilation of the lungs with nitrogen had no such effect. They concluded that these changes were due to a specific vasoconstrictive effect of oxygen upon the ductus. Tet these same investigators reported similar constriction of the ductug in fetal lambs with hyposia and asphyxia. They suggested that, in these circumstances, the constriction might have been due to excessive secretion of catechol amines stimulated by the hypoxda and the asphyxia. Although the studies of Dawes and his associates provided valuable information re-

Patent ductus arteriosus in a lamb: A case report

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a persistent patency of a vessel normally present in the fetus that connects the pulmonary arterial system to the aorta. The ductus arteriosus fails to close at birth when breathing commences and placental blood circulation is removed. Closure of the ductus arteriosus arises in response to decline pulmonary vascular resistance and increased systemic vascular re...

Radiologic aspects of operable heart disease. VI. Changes following surgical closure of patent ductus arteriosus.

The preoperative and postoperative radiologic findings in 71 patients with patent ductus arteriosus treated surgically were investigated. The purpose of the study was to determine the magnitude, character, and rapidity of the changes observed, as well as the relationship of the postoperative change to complicating cardiovascular lesions. Serial examinations were compared with the preoperative s...

Early Ductus Arteriosus Constriction: A Rare Case Presentation at 18 Weeks of Gestation

The ductus arteriosus (DA) is a vital structure in fetal circulation, carrying about two thirds of the right ventricular (RV) output to the aorta. During fetal life, ductal patency is actively preserved by several different factors, and pathologic ductal constriction causes right-sided pressure overload of the heart, leading to RV failure. There have been many reports of ductal constricti...

Histology of the persistent ductus arteriosus in cases of congenital rubella.

Histologic study of the persistent ductus arteriosus in case of a congenital rubella syndrome revealed that this persistency is probably due to an arrest in the development of the ductus. Histologically, it resembles a very immature ductus and not the most common type of persistent ductus arteriosus. The earlier finding, that in the human ductus arteriosus, the presence of an extensive subendot...
